Holidays conjure up many thoughts- long, chilly nights, snuggled up by the fire, bare feet tucked under the one you love. Some are hallmarks of summer when skin is warmed by more than the sun. There is the after Thanksgiving dinner nightcap, as the smooth, sultry burn of whiskey warms your chest, rendering your limbs heavy or include lazy kisses and wandering hands beneath your best dress on a romantic Valentine's Day date.

But sometimes, Grandma gets boozed up and passes out at the table, your brother gets caught rubbing one out under the fireworks, your kids catch mommy kissing Santa (and not on the lips), your special new toy winds up in the wrong gift bag, a goat steals and wears your sexy new thong and watching the ball drop takes on a whole new meaning.

In other words, the holidays can be magical, but sometimes, they're also just f*cking awkward.

Synopsis

“I bet I could make you fall in love in a week.” The offer seals Scott Russell’s fate.
After a bitter betrayal and an ugly divorce, the detective is forced to make a fresh start. His new position in a quiet suburb should be a walk in the park compared to his years in Chicago. However, he quickly learns that small towns come with their own issues, with citizens who are slow to forgive and even slower to forget. The town’s wealthy and reclusive author is a mystery to most. To Scott, she’s just another nameless girl on the train. With a reserved smile and shoes worth more than a month’s rent, his only concern is she might be out of his league. “I can give you seven days, but not my heart.” The acceptance is one more in a string of lies. Celeste Smythe doesn’t believe in love at first sight. Relationships take time and sometimes even that isn’t enough. Not with the secrets she harbors in her guarded heart. Yet fate keeps pushing her toward the handsome and absurdly persistent man, and resisting may be more than she can endure, no matter the risks. When the week is over, Scott may think he knows her. Celeste may know she loves him. But when the truth is revealed about the town’s most talked about citizen, he may discover he’s put more than his heart on the line

I was a pawn. Weak and someone easily manipulated. To be played with as he saw fit. Until YOU. YOU shone light in my now dark world. It was YOU who made me smile. For the first time in this game, I had hope. All because of YOU. The more powerful pieces on the board, however, were a threat to YOU and me. They would win at any cost. Two kings ruling with an iron fist. Allies or opponents, it was hard to tell. YOU promised to save me. Told me we would win. But then I was on the wrong side of the board. This isn't YOU, baby. And I don't know what to do. The game is almost over and I'm counting on YOU. Tick, tock... Warning: This Isn’t You, Baby is a dark romance. Strong sexual themes, excessive drug use, and violence, which could trigger emotional distress, are found in this story. If you are sensitive to dark themes, then this story is not for YOU. Review: Players, Bumps and Cocktail Sausages - Natasha Preston

Books #1 and #2 in the Silence series have been about Oakley Benson, and now in Book #3 we meet Oakley's brother Jasper. Jasper Dane has always tried to live up to the expectation of protecting his family, more so with what happened to his sister Oakley and as he grew older, he put away his playboy ways. Jasper married his college sweetheart Abby Dane, though life wasn't always roses as she cheated on him in college and slept with his best friend. Jasper decided to forgive Abby, and they went on to marry one another. Life has been good or, so Jasper thought with Abby getting her career on track. That is until he realizes that their relationship hasn't been as solid lately and Abby is always working late or canceling on them to go out with her work colleagues. Jasper starts to get worried and suspicious that Abby is cheating on him. One thing leads to another and on a whim Jasper plans a romantic surprise weekend away, though it will be him who gets a surprise when he catches Abby with a co-worker. Needing time to chill, Jasper goes and gets drunk and ends up sleeping with Holly - his friend's sister.  Next thing we know, Abby is back saying she is pregnant.  Will Jasper take Abby back now she is pregnant? What will happen though when his one-night stand ends with the same result? Is Jasper the father of both babies or just one? Will this mean he will finally get the family he has always wanted, but with which woman? As a fan of Cocktail Sausages, I thought that this book would be like a romantic comedy due to the title - however it isn't. Players, Bumps, and Cocktail Sausages is one big cluster of family and friendship drama with the odd funny moment.
After reading Book #3, though the Silence series can be read as standalone I am looking forward to reading Books 1 and 2.

Review: Needing Her - Molly McAdams

Back when New Adult was still a twinkle in most people's eyes and the majority of the world had not yet heard of it, except book bloggers of course. Molly McAdams was one of the first New Adult authors that I had discovered, and I fell in love with her work, and to this day, I still support her books. In her book From Ashes, we met Cassidy who had gotten a black eye from her boyfriend at the time and Detective Connor Green was called to the scene, and the two got pretty cozy.  Of course, we know that Cassidy ended up with Gage and went off to live their belated HEA. Did you ever wonder what happened to Detective Connor Green? Needing Her by Molly McAdams is his story. After the incident and Cassidy moving away, Connor went into a zombie-like stage and moved back home and ended up next-door neighbors with his best friend's younger sister. Maci Price hasn't had much experience in the dating world even though she is in her early 20's. That's what you get though for having four older brothers and a Dad and no female role-model in her life. During the book, though, we see that Maci and Connor are two people who love pranks and set out each day trying to outsmart the other. While this is happening, the pair starts spending more time together and of course you can guess what's going to happen. Can the couple though keep it a secret from Maci's brothers as she knows it will be short-lived and ruined if they find out? What will happen though when Connor decides to prove to Maci's family that he loves her? Will it backfire or will the head of the Price family stand up for his little girl?  Though Needing Her is considered a Novella, I will warn you that this is, in fact, a full-length size book at over 250+ pages. I have to admit; I was quite surprised at the length of the book especially after reading the words "novella."
Needing Her is the perfect read for fans of Molly McAdams's stories and those who have ever wondered what happened to Detective Connor Green after Cassidy left?

Review: With Malice - Eileen Cook

With Malice

Review: With Malice - Eileen Cook - June 2016

What should have been the trip of a lifetime before heading off to college for Jill ended up becoming her downfall and worst nightmare? Growing up Jill and Simone were inseparable with Simone being the drama queen and the popular one and Jill being her sidekick and lackey. With senior year over, Jill has finally got a chance to become someone on her own and learn to live without Simone's influence. That is until Simone gets herself on Jill's trip to Italy and things go haywire. Six weeks later Jill wakes up in a hospital bed in the States with no memory and learns that she and Simone were in a car crash in Italy.  Jill supposedly was the one driving and of course now everyone is pointing to Jill as the villain and as the posts and news reports come flooding in that Jill was jealous of Simone. What happened though in Italy and why are people trying to cover up the truth? Was the car accident, not an accident? I have always enjoyed Eileen Cook's YA Fiction and when I saw that she had released a new one. I knew I had to read it and I am glad I did as I loved it.  As I get older, I tend to go through waves with YA Fiction and find some of it dry and hard to get into. Eileen Cook's book With Malice, however, kept my interest right through the story as I just had to find out what had happened and why the car had crashed. One thing though that disappointed me, was I found the ending a little bit weak and a bit of a let-down from the suspense level throughout the story. In a way though the ending reminded me a bit of Abigail Haas's book Dangerous Girls.  The other thing now that has me piqued is the Amanda Knox Trial as I have heard briefly and know bits and bobs about it, but I recall reading in another review that With Malice was loosely based on the idea of the Amanda Knox Trial.  If you love Teen Romantic Suspense and Thrillers with Amnesiac Patients, then check out With Malice by Eileen Cook. The other thing that I found interesting with this story, as it does show us often how the news outlets, media can romanticize a story for ratings.

VBT# Take Me With You - Nina G. Jones

Are you in the mood for dark fiction? Does the cover draw you in? These were two of the main factors that got me reading Take Me With You by Nina G. Jones. The book starts off with a killer who strikes at 3.15am as he says that's the perfect time as it is too late to keep awake and too early for others to be awakening. I found this interesting and wonder if it's true as I often wake around this time and try and get back to sleep and I am in that in-between state of sleepiness and awakeness. Our killer stalks and hunts his prey before attacking and builds up a relationship with his prey, breaking in and taking their mementos. He also seems a bit fair and just as he gives his victims at the beginning the illusion of free choice. During his time he hasn't been obsessed with any of his previous victims, but someone has caught his mind - Vesper. She has captivated him and spends more time building up an imaginary relationship with her, watching her. When he is ready, he attacks, but things go a tad haywire as Vesper's younger brother wakes and start screaming. I could relate to Vesper and the way she is with her brother as he has special needs and I have siblings and a parent who fall into the Autism/Asperger's category.  During the hunt, Vesper tells Sam - the kidnapper to take her with him and so he does. Over the next course of the novel, we learn a bit more about Sam and watch how his and Vespers relationship strengthens. Take Me With You is a book that Stockholm Syndrome is romanticized as throughout the story - the love and chemistry -though sick and twisted as it may be starting to bloom between Sam and Vesper.
This is a read not for the faint-hearted and one that if you enjoy Dark and Gritty Fiction, books with Dark Romance plots. Then check out Take Me With You by Nina G. Jones today.
