Review : The Shepherd - Ethan Cross - March 2011

When I was offered the chance to review "The Shepherd" by Ethan Cross, I jumped at the chance as it A) looked like a great mystery/thriller read , B) the tagline read "Silence of the Lambs meets The Bourne Identity - which as a reader and a movie watcher , I had read all the books and seen the flicks and C) Written by author Andrew Gross which I have read all of his writings raved the book to be for fans of James Patterson - whom Ive read every single book and fans of Criminal Minds - which I happen to have seen all 4 seasons on DVD and am currently watching Season Five. So all in perspective, I had high expectations , that I should enjoy the book and I wasn't disappointed as from the first page , The Shepherd kept me thrilled and was written with a fast-pace in mind and the chapters aren't very long - though in saying that they are not as short as James Patterson's novels , think about the length of a Lee Child or Harlan Coben novel. For me, to continue reading a mystery/thriller it has to be entertaining otherwise I get bored with it . The main character Marcus , if you are familiar with people like Jack Reacher, Jack Morgan, Myron Bolitar, Joe Hunter and of course the infamous Jason Bourne - the whole vigilante role then you will enjoy the book as lead character Marcus - a former detective ends up involved in a conspiracy and a whole lotta of trouble along with Francis who is like a hitman. Soon Marcus will eventually find himself embroiled in order to save his life and those around him in a game of cat and mouse government style. Of course we chuck into the mix, a former FBI agent and a love interest whom Marcus goes for, we read as Marcus tries to juggle his life, relationships and work which involves hunting down ruthless and manipulative and of course dangerous that could borderline psychopath - serial killers.
There's something for everyone in The Shepherd and is the perfect read for anyone who likes murder, mayhem and mischief and the occasional bend of the rules
